MHP's (powerful) homework assignment

We always enjoy preparing a little "MHP" homework on Saturday afternoon so that you can read more about the issues we discussed in the morning.

On Saturday's show we talked about the "two faces of power."  The idea comes from a 1962 American Political Science Review article by Peter Bachrach and Morton Baratz that is required reading in most political science programs.  You can read it for yourself here. And for a more practical take on agenda setting in world politics, "Agenda Setting, the UN, and NGOs: Gender Violence and Reproductive Rights" is a useful read.

If you have been hearing about the late professor Derrick Bell all week, I encourage you take a moment and get to know him as a man. He has dozens of legal writings, but his book, "Ethical Ambition: Living a Life of Meaning and Worth" is the best way to understand his activism, his spirit, and the self-sacrifice that made him such a beloved and respected professor.

Want to learn more about hip-hop and politics? Start with show guest, Joan Morgan's "Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip Hop Feminist Breaks it Down."

Also read Tricia Rose's classic "Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America" and "The Hip-Hop Wars: What We Talk about When We Talk About Hip Hop and Why it Matters."

To understand the link between hip-hop culture and youth politics, read Bakari Kitwana's "The Hip Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture" and Cathy Cohen's "Democracy Remixed: Black Youth and the Future of American Politics."

Last assignment: set your clocks ahead by one hour so you don't miss us tomorrow morning at 10am Eastern Daylight Time! Time to spring forward, #nerdland! See you then.
