A Melissa Harris Perry report on "Being Transgendered in America" has been nominated for a GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media award. The segment was nominated in the category of Outstanding TV Journalism in a Newsmagazine.
The April 15 discussion focused on the difficulties transgender individuals and communities face around the country. Guests included Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality; Kate Bornstein, author of "A Queer and Pleasant Danger;" and Mel Wymore, who is running for a City Council seat in 2013 on New York's Upper West Side. If elected, Wymore will become the first openly transgendered person on the New York City Council.
Other msnbc and NBC News programs nominated included The Rachel Maddow Show and Rock Center with Brian Williams. The first of three awards ceremonies will take place in New York on March 16.
