This Sunday on MHP, bringing down the flag. We discuss the historical context of the confederate flag, and the importance of dealing with both symbolism and substance. All eyes were on activist Bree Newsome on Saturday when she scaled the flagpole outside the South Carolina statehouse to remove the Confederate flag herself. We look at the impact of individuals who are prepared to take direct non-violent action. Also on Sunday’s program we ask the question: what should white  people do to help dismantle racism?

Joining Melissa Harris-Perry to discuss the flag and race in America are:

  • Paul Frymer, Associate Professor, Department of Politics, Princeton University and Author, "Uneasy Alliances: Race and Party Competition in America"
  • Cristina Beltran, Associate Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis, NYU and Author, "The Trouble with Unity
  • Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and Author, "The Condemnation of Blackness"
  • Beth Fouhy, Senior Editor, msnbc.com
  • Katon Dawson, National Republican Consultant and Former South Carolina GOP Chair
  • Whitney Dow, Director/Producer of "Whiteness Project"

Then, we continue our discussion on the Dominican Republic and the deportation of more than a hundred thousand Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent. Back to talk about the deportation in the Dominican Republic is France Francois, Spokesperson for the Association of Haitian Professionals, and Edward Paulino, Assistant, Professor of History at John Jay College/CUNY and Board member of the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights.

And, President Obama’s big week. Obamacare is here to stay, marriage equality as the law of the land and the president moved many with his eulogy of Reverend Clementa Pinckney. Oh, and then there was the big win on trade. While some have called this the ‘best week ever for Obama’, we will look at how this past week exemplified the complexity of Obama’s presidency.

Then, we tell the story of Nan-Hui Jo, the Korean immigrant convicted last month of abducting her American-born daughter, after leaving the child’s father because of alleged abuse. She now faces deportation. We will look at the challenges facing immigrant domestic violence survivors, child custody and The Violence Against Women Act with Nan-Hui Jo’s attorney, Zach Nightingale, and Hyejin Shim, Spokesperson for the Korean-American Coalition to End Domestic Violence.

Plus, we’ll bring you the latest on Rikers, take you live to New York City’s Pride Fest Parade, and speak with Charles Miller Jr., the organist who chimed in during President Obama’s ‘Amazing Grace.’
