John McCain has an awfully strange sense of humor.
The Arizona senator raised some eyebrows on Tuesday after jokingly telling reporters that the Senate would waterboard Sen. John Kerry during his confirmation hearings for secretary of state.
“We will look forward to interrogating him at his hearing…mercilessly,” said the Republican. "We will bring back—for the only time—waterboarding to get the truth out him,” McCain said.
McCain, a former prisoner of war in North Vietnam, has been an outspoken opponent of torture. He spearheaded the fight to prohibit certain so-called enhanced interrogation techniques greenlighted by the Bush Administration.
McCain’s remarks came has he and a group of lawmakers discussed the situation in Syria following a visit to the Middle East. McCain has outspokenly criticized President Obama for not doing more to aid the rebels.
“We had a good conversation with Sen. Kerry. We have had numerous conversations over a long period of time,” said McCain. “He is very concerned about the issue and I think he shares the priorities that we are discussing today.”
