When was the last time you heard gun rights, polygamy, and bestiality all cited to make the same point? Buckle up.
The Hardball Sideshow welcomes back Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert.
On February 14, the Congressman participated in a conference call with Tea Party Unity. In newly released audio of the call from Right Wing Watch, Gohmert simultaneously takes on gun-control advocates and people in favor of same-sex marriage. According to Gohmert, limiting high-capacity ammunition clips is just the first step on a slippery slope to outlawing guns entirely.
“I had this discussion with some wonderful, caring Democrats earlier this week on the issue of, well, they said, ‘Surely you could agree to limit the number of rounds in a magazine, couldn’t you? How would that be problematic?’” he said. “And I pointed out, well, once you make it 10—then why would you draw the line at 10? What’s wrong with 9? Or 11?”
It’s not the first time that argument has been made. But Congressman Gohmert went on: “It’s kind of like marriage when you say it’s not a man and a woman any more. Then why not have three men and one woman, or four women and one man, or why not somebody has a love for an animal?”
This is just the latest nugget from Congressman Gohmert, and it's right at home in the Sideshow.
A week after that conference call, Gohmert touted the Second Amendment as the most effective way to enforce other aspects of the Constitution, therefore making it the most important of all amendments. Gohmert suggested that without the presence of guns, we'd have full-on Sharia law right here in the United States.
“We’ve got some people who think Sharia law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution,” he said. “But the guns are there…to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed.”
