The national unemployment rate inched closer to 9% in January's jobs report. There were 157,000 total jobs added in January, with strong gains in the retail, health care and construction sectors.

Ed Koch, the boisterous former mayor of New York City, has died after recent battles with pneumonia and anemia.  Koch led the city from more than a decade, pulling the city out of serious financial problems and later becoming an outspoken figure for both sides of the political aisle. Ed Koch was 88 years old.
