Former head of President Obama's auto task force and Wall Street financier Steve Rattner told Andrea Mitchell Monday that White House Chief of Staff and former Office of Management and Budget Director Jack Lew "appears to be the front runner" for Treasury Secretary.
Also rumored to be under consideration are former Clinton Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman, BlackRock C.E.O. Larry Fink, and former Clinton Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles.
Former Senator Alan Simpson told Andrea Mitchell Reports last Wednesday that Bowles, his co-Chair in the President's Debt Commission, wouldn't consider a cabinet appointment “because he wouldn't want to serve in a dysfunctional government."
President Obama is expected to begin nominating cabinet officials this week for vacancies at the Departments of the Treasury, State, and Defense. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Monday, "I can promise you that no decision have been made by the president—you will hear from him when he believes he’s ready to make any announcements."
