Portland is one of the many cities nationwide that still bears the deep scars of protests initially kicked off by police brutality and racial injustice, then fueled by federal agents operating violently and without accountability. A movement to “Defund the Police” grew there night after night, and since then, discussion of the phrase’s meaning has grown. “Defund the Police” may not be the most artful term, and it may actually be politically harmful, but it does represent an important sentiment held by many in this nation. It’s time for the next president to lead the conversation that the slogan demands.
