Governors outline agenda for the nation

The National Governor’s Association Meeting started Friday in Milwaukee, Wisc., and economic growth has been topping the governors’ agendas.

Delaware’s Democratic governor and outgoing chairman of the National Governor’s Association, Jack Markell, joined Weekends with Alex Witt on Saturday to explain the steps he believes that need to be implemented to snap the country back to lower levels of unemployment.

Taking the lead of the businesses themselves and understanding what employers who make the decisions care about most should be of primary concern, Markell said. He pointed to communities with great schools and workforces with a focus “on making sure there is a linkage between the skills we are teaching and the skills in the marketplace.”

Another focal point at of the National Governor’s Association Meeting has been securing jobs for people with disabilities.

“We just released yesterday this blueprint, ‘a better bottom line’ and how we give more people with disabilities an opportunity for employment, because there are so many of them who want to work who have not been given that shot,” he said.
