A leading foreign relations expert says ongoing fiscal crises in the U.S. are undermining the country’s national security efforts. In a new interview, Council on Foreign Relations rresident Richard Haass says rising U.S. national debt, continuing budget deficits and weak economic growth are hurting the country both at home and overseas.
Haass spoke with msnbc’s Alex Witt in an “Office Politics” segment.
“Unless we fix the domestic sources of American power, we’re not going to be in a position to begin to deal with all the challenges beyond our borders. Unless we get it right here at home, how are we going to set an example that the rest of the world is going to war and want to emulate? Unless we get it right here at home, how are we going to reduce our vulnerability to say, a Chinese decision to stop financing our debts? We gotta do all those things.”
Haass emphasized he was not talking about isolationism. ” I am talking about though getting it right within the United States or we’re gonna find ourselves weak and vulnerable and unable to lead in the world.”
