Last weekend, Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz narrowly edged out their stiffest competitors – Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, respectively – in the race for their party’s nominations for president at the Iowa caucuses. While Clinton’s narrow victory was considered too close for comfort, Cruz’s win came as a surprise in light of Trump’s higher poll numbers leading up to the Monday night caucuses.

Clinton and Sanders then battled it out on Thursday in the first Democratic debate without Martin O’Malley, who dropped out of the presidential race after Iowa. 

President Obama made his first visit to a mosque in the United States since becoming president when he visited the Islamic Society of Baltimore in Maryland.

Riots broke out in Greece over planned pension reforms, and the Zika virus, which has been linked to a neurodevelopmental disorder called microcephaly in babies and Guillain–Barré syndrome in adults, continues to spread through the Americas without a known cure or vaccine.

Two police officers were shot in the Bronx, and a crane collapsed early Friday morning in lower Manhattan as snow fell again across the Northeast.
