Anthony “Carlos Danger” Weiner has earned himself a rather undesirable distinction. According to the latest poll from Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y., the disgraced former congressman-turned-New York City mayoral candidate has the highest unfavorable rating ever on record for the pollster.
Eighty percent of New York state voters have an unfavorable opinion of Weiner, while only 11% saw him in a positive light. That tops the 79% unfavorable rating held by former New York governor-turned-New York City comptroller candidate Eliot Spitzer after he resigned from the governorship in 2008 over his prostitution scandal. Three-quarters of Democrats and New York City voters saw Weiner as unfavorable, the poll released Monday found.
As for Spitzer’s current ratings, they have not improved much. Only 33% of the Empire State’s voters have a favorable view of Spitzer while 59% have an unfavorable opinion of him. For the sake of comparison, well over half of New York voters have a favorable rating of President Obama while two-thirds have a favorable opinion of Hillary Clinton.
As for the attention both Weiner and Spitzer are giving New York, 68% say it is an embarrassment for the state. In New York City where both men are on the ballot that number also remains high – 62% call the attention from their candidacies embarrassing.
And speaking of embarrassing attention, Weiner participated in New York’s Dominican Day parade on Sunday and was spotted by the press holding some very large plantains that were inexplicably taped together with duct tape. The crew at msnbc’s Morning Joe took note of the pun-filled headlines about the mayoral hopeful’s eventful weekend and looked at Weiner’s first television campaign ad.
