Sean Astin is no stranger to helping heroes in their effort to save the world, as he did playing “Sam” in Lord of the Rings. Now Astin is taking on an even bigger challenge as campaign manager for Dan Adler in his first congressional bid.

Adler, who is running as one of 16 candidates in a special election for the 36th Congressional District in the western part of Los Angeles County, is currently an entertainment industry executive according to the Associated Press.

Astin and Adler have fittingly chosen to run on an outsider/underdog campaign strategy. This suits Adler who is running against well known candidates, including Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn and California Secretary of State Deborah Bowen; and is equally fitting for Astin who played the iconic underdog “Rudy.” Astin campaigned for Hilary Clinton in her 2008 presidential bid.
