Mitt Romney won the Illinois Republican primary, according to NBC News projections. His victory in Obama’s adopted home state could help the former Massachusetts governor start to silence critics within the Republican party. Illinois Republicans tend to be more moderate and less concerned about religion — factors that most likely tipped the scales in Romney’s favor against the extreme social conservative Rick Santorum.
