Mitt Romney’s altered stances on foreign policy at the final debate blew Democratic Senator John Kerry’s mind.
“My head is dizzy tonight trying to follow Mitt Romney,” Kerry, the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told msnbc’s Lawrence O’Donnell.
In a stunning reversal, Romney said he now agrees with Obama that troops should leave Afghanistan by 2014. He previously criticized President Obama for publicly stating a specific deadline.
“Weeks ago, Mitt Romney said ‘I’m going to listen to the generals, you made a mistake Mr. President to set a date certain, you never should have announced it,’ and now tonight, he agrees,” said an exasperated Kerry. He declared, “We saw a commander-in-chief and a candidate in total confusion who is– if you’re leaders in the world– you’re scratching your head tonight and saying how could the American people possibly elect a guy who has changed his position every few months and doesn't know what he’s going to do on foreign policy. I thought I was listening to the Wikipedia candidate tonight.”
During much of the 90-minute debate, Romney appeared to agree with the president on a range of policy issues.
Kerry, lawmaker from a Massachusetts and a former presidential candidate himself, played the role of Romney in debate practice sessions with President Obama. That’s about where the similarities end. He joked that he needs an “exorcism” after getting into the Romney character.
