Pennsylvania House Majority Leader, Mike Turzai has been an outspoken supporter of a new voter ID law, requiring voters to bring photo ID to cast a ballot. He called it a “common sense approach” that “is not designed to suppress voter turnout.”
Yet, a comment he made over the weekend at a Republican event suggests a different reason for pushing the legislation.
Turzai told the audience, “We are focused on making sure that we meet our obligations that we’ve talked about for years. Pro-Second Amendment? The Castle Doctrine, it’s done. First pro-life legislation, abortion facility regulations in 22 years, done. Voter ID, which is gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done.”
Let that last line sink in: “Voter ID, which is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania, done”? With that last statement, Turzai suggested the true purpose behind voter ID laws: to limit Democratic voters so Republicans can win.
In response to the uproar Turzai’s spokesperson said, “Rep. Turzai was speaking at a partisan, political event. He was simply referencing, for the first time in a long while, the Republican presidential candidate will be on a more even keel thanks to voter ID…Anyone looking further into it has their own agenda.”
