Introducing the K.I.N.D. tuition program for girls

Now you can also help these kids through a new tuition program.

Since msnbc’s Lawrence O’Donnell partnered with UNICEF to create the K.I.N.D. fund two years ago, we have now raised more than $4.7 million to help provide children in Malawi with a better education. Our goal is to give them the most basic tool–a place to sit, read and write.

Now you can also help these kids through a new tuition program. For young girls in particular, getting a solid education is more difficult in Malawi, where only 7% of girls complete their high school education. In the rural areas, girls make up 9% of all secondary school students. One major reason for high drop-out rates is the cost of secondary education. Unlike primary school, it isn’t free. And in order to attend some of the better schools, children must travel longer distances and pay for their room and board.

In an effort to make education more accessible for these students, the K.I.N.D. fund will now provide scholarships for 2,000 Malawian girls, primarily from rural areas, to cover all four years of high school. Local PTAs will help us identify those most in need.

A donation of $177 will cover one year of a girl’s education, which includes tuition, room and board, text books, transportation, a school uniform and other learning supplies.
