First Word: All eyes on South Carolina’s special election

Updated

As the country awaits the results of South Carolina’s special election Tuesday evening, both Republican former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Democratic newbie Elizabeth Colbert Busch will rely on their voting base to come out and vote. The toss-up election will be determined by Republicans and conservative voters, and the African-American turnout. In the 2010 general election, African-American participation was about 18%. Polls will close at 7:00 pm ET.
