Tonight's Afghanistan speech will blow a lot of other stories off the newscape. A few of them caught my eye as deserving more attention than they'll likely get. Here they are:James Risen was one of the most important reporters in the struggle to reveal the excesses and abuses of power undertaken by the Bush Administration in the name of Keeping Us Safe. Sadly, a whistleblower case has given us an affidavit in which he says that the Obama Administration, too, continues to intimidate truth-tellers and reporters. read more

It's amazing how quickly hawks turn to doves. Pretty much the entire GOP presidential field wants to draw down in Afghanistan. Today, at least, we got a glimpse of why this is.Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell explained that the Republican position on the use of US military power depends in some degree...on which party the president belongs to. The technical term for this is Putting Country Second (At Best).A couple of interesting polls out today, too, both about the economy. read more
