Underbuzzed

The Amazing Technicolor World of Michele Bachmann is sucking up a lot of oxygen today. Here’s a look at some of today’s just-maybe more-important underbuzzed stories. As always, share your own in the comments:

  • An 82-year-old man was robbed of everything. When young black men do this it’s called a crime. When big business does it, it’s called an accidental foreclosure. But I’m sure there’ll be criminal charges, right? Right?
  • We keep hearing how strapped American companies are – even though they’re swimming in cash. Well, it turns out they have enough money to spend it on fighting rules that would require them to disclose the yawning chasm between CEO and worker pay. I wonder how shareholders feel about their money being used that way.
  • In the past two days, I’ve seen the right wing complain that only courts and legislatures have advanced same-sex marriage. The people have never voted directly for it. Well, for one thing, that’s not how representative democracy works. But for another, the implication that it’s only the alleged “elites” of courts and legislatures who support same-sex marriage, not the “real” people. Well, suck it.
  • It’s one thing to say, “I didn’t anticipate it.” It’s another to say, “It was beyond the realm of possibility for anyone to anticipate it.” In the last decade, Republicans seem to have unlearned how to say the former and now automatically say the latter, even when plenty of people not only could have anticipated it, but did. Pres. Bush claimed no one could have predicted 9/11 – and then we found out he could have had he chosen to listen to the people sounding the warnings. And now Rep. Steve King (R-IA) claims the Missouri River flooding could not have been anticipated. Well, it was anticipated – by climate-change scientists. Here’s a tip, congressman, when your theories lack predictive power, drop them.
  • Another state targets Planned Parenthood. This is getting really bad. It’s bigger than an assault on reproductive rights, it’s an assault on women.
