Tonight’s Afghanistan speech will blow a lot of other stories off the newscape. A few of them caught my eye as deserving more attention than they’ll likely get. Here they are:

  • James Risen was one of the most important reporters in the struggle to reveal the excesses and abuses of power undertaken by the Bush Administration in the name of Keeping Us Safe. Sadly, a whistleblower case has given us an affidavit in which he says that the Obama Administration, too, continues to intimidate truth-tellers and reporters. Not good.
  • The Congressional Budget Office gives us another grim estimate of where our debt is heading. That part of the story will get LOTS of pickup. What won’t is the point made yet again by the invaluable Ezra Klein, that the long-term cure for our debt is to do NOTHING. The legislation we have in place, as enacted, will bring our debt back down – if Congress doesn’t do one more thing (especially not renewing the Bush tax cuts again).
  • And all the asinine, macho-swagger talk about American citizens who are “sovereign” from Washington? The yahoos who propagate this stuff are encouraging others to reject lawful law-enforcement – even in situations that have nothing to do with politics. It puts the police on the front lines of a needless conflict. And in this case, it got someone dead.

I’m a little skimpy on my Underbuzzed today, so please fill out my list with suggestions of your own…
