Underbuzzed

Updated

In tribute to the unfolding Murdoch scandal, I’m going to start off today’s Underbuzzed with a little nepotism – a story of my own. You can add your own to today’s Underbuzzed in the comments.

  • Is it against the law for US corporations to bribe foreign officials as Rupert Murdoch’s people are accused of doing? You bet it is. But not everyone thinks it should be. One of the most powerful lobbyists against the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act has been the US Chamber of Commerce. And who’s one of their biggest bankrollers? Rupert Murdoch.
  • Want a good example of how Republican debate on budgetary issues has turned into a slurry of non sequiturs? Sure ya go. So, Speaker Boehner tells Pres. Obama how hard it is for Republicans to cut entitlements. The issue on the table, then, is whether it’s true that it’s hard for Republicans to cut entitlements, right? So Pres. Obama naturally reminds Boehner that the GOP just voted overwhelmingly to cut entitlements, when they passed the Ryan Plan. Point-counterpoint. And how does Boehner respond? “Excuse us for trying to lead.” See what he did there? Non sequitur. Leadership wasn’t the issue at all. Ease of cutting entitlements was. Did Boehner respond to that? Nope. Pretended they were debating something else entirely. All you need to know about the intellectual honesty of the current Republican leadership.
  • Bad enough that veterans are hit by unemployment disproportionately. What’ll happen if the self-professed pro-military party fails to raise the debt ceiling? Military families will suffer.
  • The GOP argues that the rich for whom they want to cut taxes are not like Thurston Howell III. Cute. Of course, the rich for whom the GOP is arguing are rich beyond Howell’s wildest dreams. They own their own yachts, rather than chartering small boats like Howell did for three-hour tours. They actually own their own islands, where Howell was forced to be a squatter on one. Howell wanted desperately to bring his trunkload of money back to the US – while the rich whom the GOP are defending want to keep it offshore.
