The animal rights group PETA has stepped in to offer toilet paper to Trenton firefighters, cops and other city officials who were down to their last rolls of toilet paper.

Trenton city officials have been locked in a budget battle for months and the restroom supplies of public buildings were almost completely depleted.

PETA's condition in carrying the rolls is that each one must carry a message that is anti-slaughterhouse. Every sheet of toilet paper will read, "Slaughterhouses are so filthy that more than half of all meat is contaminated with fecal bacteria." They’ve offered a six month supply.

City council spokeswoman Lauren Ira said that all city facilities would have run out of toilet paper by weeks end if no action was taken. City council also approved a $16,000 stop gap measure to address the problem.

The vote to pay for the toilet paper rolls has been stalled in debate three times since it’s come up for a vote in November. City council members parted with the Mayor and voted down a $46,000 contract with a local supplier because of a $4,000 line item for paper cups. They say it's too much for the cash-strapped city.
