Tea Party Suckers, Chapter 8,439

Updated

Politico quotes unnamed GOP leadership aides on the real point behind last week’s push by business groups who want Congress to raise the debt ceiling. It’s all about getting the Tea Party to betray one of their most fundamental beliefs and actually vote to increase the amount the US can go into debt. Not only were GOP leaders cool with the business-group letters that appeared at first blush to target the GOP leadership, turns out the leadership actually helped to write one of them:

“…the narrative that the letters frustrate Republican leadership misses the plain intention of the missives, according to GOP leadership aides. House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy have all said they know they’ll have to increase the nation’s borrowing authority – but they are also demanding that some mix of spending cuts and budget caps ride along with legislation preventing a default. Indeed, the business groups have the same aim as Republican leaders: Get the rank and file to “yes” on the debt ceiling. A Chamber spokeswoman told Huddle that there was no coordination with GOP leadership in drafting that organization’s letter. But a senior GOP aide said Republican leaders helped draft the other one.”

It’ll work, too. Not because Washington has somehow magically corrupted Tea Party freshmen. But because they’re starting to understand how ignorant they were.
