In the midst of tornado season, this year goes down as the most detrimental in history–and it’s not over yet.

Here are some stats from Newsweek magazine:

  • So far, nearly 1,000 tornadoes have hit the United States.
  • In the past year, more than 500 American deaths have come from tornadoes.
  • Tornadoes have cost the U.S. $9 billion in damage just this year.

To understand how unpredictable tornadoes are, Newsweek says the 24 minute warning residents of Joplin, MO had was generous compared to most tornado victims.

Yesterday, President Obama met with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate in the Situation Room to discuss American preparedness.
