Mitt Romney stumbled badly this week in his debut on the world stage as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
Romney, who claims to have rescued the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics a decade ago, has managed to rankle the Olympic hosts in Britain, from Prime Minister David Cameron on down.
It happened when the Republican presidential candidate called London’s problems with Olympic Games preparation “disconcerting” during an interview with NBC News’ Brian Williams in London.
In an apparent slight to the Romney’s management of the Salt Lake City games, Cameron responded by saying Britain is hosting the Olympics “in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”
And London Mayor Boris Johnson told tens of thousands gathered in Hyde Park: “There’s a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes we are!”
Romney tried to reverse himself today (yes, yet another flip-flop), but the damage was done.
