The Georgia Republican who replaced Newt Gingrich in the House after the last disastrous prolonged government shutdown says that while there seems to be no endgame in sight in the current congressional stand-still, the GOP must remain united.

“A food fight within the party is not the way to to it,” said Rep. Johnny Isakson. “We are not going to take the bait and take on the House and create a division with our party, but we will sit down and talk about other routes we might take.”

He warned that “shutdowns have consequences” and said he was never in support of shutting down the government over Obamacare. Isakson sounded open to retroactive pay for the more than 800,000 federal workers who are going without paychecks.

“They shouldn’t be injured,” Isakson said of federal workers. “It wasn’t their fault we shut down.”
