Navy personnel and other workers were seen leaving the Navy Yard facility Monday afternoon after a mass shooting had initially locked down the facility and the area, NBC’s Tom Costello reported. D.C. public schools said they would be dismissing students at the regular time.
Officials reported that one gunman was dead after he opened fire Monday morning at the Navy Yard, killing a dozen people.
Some safety precautions remained in place. Two nearby schools have cancelled after school athletics, visitors are still not allowed to enter the U.S. Senate, and the Washington Nationals postponed tonight’s game “in light of the circumstances,” the organization said in a statement.
