Today on The Cycle: Back Spin of Polls

With 12 days until election day there are many polls out there trying to predict who will be the next president.

With 12 days until election day there are many polls out there trying to predict who will be the next president. While there are the Gallup, Real Clear Politics, NBC/Wall Street Journal and other big name polls, a few others take a more interesting look at the race.

For instance, hamburgers.  Would you rather eat a burger with Obama or Romney? A new nationwide survey by Harris Interactive on behalf of Smashburger, the nation’s fastest growing better burger restaurant, surveyed 2,094 people and found that 59% of those surveyed would rather eat a hamburger with Obama.  41% want to grab a burger with Romney.

How about consumer trends?  Right now, Obama Halloween masks are outselling Romney Halloween masks 60-40 according to Spirit Halloween, the country’s largest seasonal Halloween retailer. This could be one way Americans are supporting their candidate, but is it an indication of November 6th?

And did you know the number of shark attacks is also a good predictor of the race?  A 2004 study by Bartels and Christopher Achen of Princeton University found that voters punished incumbent President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 after an uptick in shark attacks in New Jersey.

Beach town voters hurt by a hit to tourism turned on Wilson.  His share of the vote dropped by 8 percentage points from his first run in the 1912 election.

Hamburgers, Halloween and Jaws. Which do you think has the best odds?

Be sure to tune into The Cycle today at 3:40pm to see some other polls that we feel could help predict who will walk away as the winner come November 6.
