Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas may be facing a tougher primary race than he thought after his Tea Party challenger got a boost from Sen. Ted Cruz’s father.

“She’s a strict constitutionalist. She’s a strong conservative and she wants to do what’s right,” Rafael Cruz said about Katrina Pierson when he attended a fundraiser for Pierson at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas according to The Dallas News. Cruz, an Evangelical pastor with his own following, has sparked controversy in the past over his comments about President Obama in support of his son.

Senator Ted Cruz, a prominent Texas member of the Tea Party movement, has not endorsed anyone in the Texas 32nd congressional district race. “He’s speaking for himself,” former Dallas County Republican Party Chairman Jonathan Neerman, said of the elder Cruz. “Ted Cruz has not endorsed in this race.” According to Neerman, the Rafael Cruz’s endorsement will not be a big boost for Pierson.

Pierson announced she was running against Sessions, who is in his ninth term in Congress, in September. “The people of my hometown deserve an elected leader who will fight for them – a leader who won’t play the go-along-to-get along, business-as-usual politics that have been hurting this country for so long,” Pierson said during her announcement.

As Pierson’s focus remains on “putting people first” she is ready to battle for the GOP primary in March.
