Although Mitt Romney’s campaign has developed a reputation for secrecy, many believe he will soon make his vice presidential announcement, allowing for excitement to build around a fresh face prior to the Republican National Convention, taking place in Tampa in late August.

But depending on whose face we’re talking about, it’s hard to say whether “excitement” will be the right word.

The man generally considered to be the leading contender for the role leaves a little to be desired. If Romney wants momentum, he’ll reach for someone less safe.

Pundits have long banked on Rob Portman, the Ohio senator whose résumé, though impressive, is about as bland as his affectations (of which there are few).

After a stint as a trade law expert, he served in the first Bush administration as White House counsel and then as director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. He was later appointed as U.S. trade representative in George W. Bush’s White House, and then served as his director of the Office of Management and Budget.
