On Friday, while opening an information technology gallery at the Science Museum, Queen Elizabeth sent out her first official tweet from @BritishMonarchy to 724,000 followers.
“I mentioned earlier that Queen Victoria took a great interest in the invention of the telephone, and Your Majesty has followed in this tradition of embracing new technology,” Ian Blatchford the museum’s director said during his introduction. “You made the first live Christmas broadcast in 1957 and an event relished by historians took place on 26 March 1976, when you became the first monarch to send an email, during a visit to the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment. May I now invite you to join me so that you may send your first tweet.”
After touring the attraction at the museum, Queen Elizabeth removed her white glove and proceeded to send her first message via a tablet screen in front of about 600 guests. The Tweet, which was sent for the Twitter account that had been previously managed by the Royal Palace, was verified by the palace shortly after using the hashtag #TheQueenTweets.
