Nothing says happy birthday like a crazy pair of socks--for George H.W.

Duck socks, hamburger socks, colorful striped socks and more adorned feet Wednesday for those celebrating the 89th birthday of former President George H.W. Bush, a notorious fan of wacky socks.

The former president has become famous as of late for his exotic footwear, from an American flag motif he wore at his son George W. Bush’s portrait unveiling at the White House last year, to the bright pink and blue number he sported at the dedication of the George W. Bush library in April.

"Join us in wishing President Bush a Happy Birthday by wearing your most colorful or outlandish socks," reads a message on The George Bush Library Foundation's website. "All are invited to submit a photo wearing crazy socks to share in the birthday festivities."

Politicos and other well-wishers used Twitter to participate under the hashtag #41s89th.

Bush joined in Wednesday’s sock soiree when he posted a picture on his Facebook page with a different patterned sock on each foot and had his great-granddaughter, Mila, showing off booties.
