It was a patriotic week worldwide, with military celebrations, demonstrations and battle reenactments starting on Memorial Day in the United States and continuing across Europe. But the week was equally temperamental, with labor reform protests continuing throughout France and clashes between demonstrators and police in Australia.

In Istanbul, citizens simultaneously celebrated the 563rd anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottoman Turks and protested on the third anniversary of the start of the Gezi Park upheaval.

Iraqi pro-government security forces have brought fierce fighting to the Islamic State’s front, near Fallujah, while an al-Shabab attack on the Somali capital of Mogadishu killed at least 10, including two MPs, and wounded another 50 people.

In the U.S. presidential race, Donald Trump rallied with bikers at the annual Rolling Thunder First Amendment Demonstration Run, and Jon Bon Jovi joined Hillary Clinton in New Jersey.

Real Madrid fans spilled onto Spanish streets after the soccer team won the UEFA Champions League, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 96-88, in Game 7 of the NBA Western Conference Finals.
