Republican National Convention kicks off in Cleveland
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Republican National Convention kicked off Monday in Cleveland, where Donald Trump is expected to officially clinch the Republican presidential nomination. The theme of the first day of the convention is “Make America Safe Again,” a riff on Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.
A number of high-profile speakers are scheduled to address the crowd on Monday, including Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa. The headliner Monday will be Trump’s wife, Melania, who often appears with Trump but rarely gives public interviews.
Some pro- and anti-Trump protesters have gathered outside the Quicken Loans Arena, the site of the RNC. Leading into Monday, Cleveland officials said they had only made one arrest so far.
