"N*ggerhead" was once the name of a mountain. More than one, actually. One can search and discover hundreds of American hills, creeks, canyons, bays, valleys, springs, lakes, ponds, knobs and gulches with variations on "n*gger" in their histories. Americans could, once upon a time, purchase "N*ggerhead"-branded items: soap, oysters, tobacco, golf tees, shrimp, pistols and (sigh) even watermelon. Also, it seems, you could lease a hunting ranch in West Texas that went by that name. read more

 I went looking today for YouTube clips from the ill-named hunting lease used by Texas Governor Rick Perry's family in Throckmorton County. If you've got any, please holler. Meanwhile, a taste of life in the small county seat:Throckmorton, Texas, celebrated its Sequicentennial on October 4, 2008. One of the key events of the day was the Homecoming Parade. Floats were entered into the parade by the Ash family, the cheerleaders, the elementary school kids, the ranches, and many others. read more

Since Republicans gained control of so many state legislatures in 2010, they've been working to pass laws that make voting harder. We've been asking on the show whether they've made voting hard enough, in enough places, to change the landscape in 2012.Now, from the Brennan Center for Justice, comes the beginning of an answer:The states that have already cut back on voting rights will provide 171 electoral votes in 2012 – 63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.In those states, minority, student and poor voters are most likely to feel the pinch from the new rules. read more

Recipe:1/2 oz. lemon juice1/2 oz. simple syrup (sugar* and water mixed in equal parts)1 1/2 oz. booze (Some people make it with gin, other people make it with cognac. It's traditional and therefore more correct to make it with gin, but certain cable television news hosts prefer it with cognac.)Shake that up with ice.Strain into a champagne glassTop with champagne.Lemon twist.Fin.*Rachel explained that her simple syrup was brown because it's Demerara syrup.
