Heat, don't fail me now

07/21/11 06:34PM

Since it’s hot pretty much everywhere in the U.S —really nasty, sticky, is-that-smell-me? hot--- renowned meteorologist Rush Limbaugh helpfully asserts that the triple digit heat index is a liberal conspiracy designed to make everyone feel extra squishy. And really, how can anyone argue with that?Nodding in sweaty concurrence, the shadowy authorities at the Message Control Center issued further instructions in this secret, fake directive to their conservative minions.  read more

Challenge: Fun with the Nixon archives

07/21/11 04:31PM

The Nixon Library has released a new treasure trove of documents from the Nixon White House online. We here at TRMS spent a bit of time digging through them to see what nuggets we could find. One that stood out for me: Someone please tell me that song exists.Barring that, have at the documents and let us know in the comments what you find. read more

Deal or no deal?

Deal or no deal?

07/21/11 01:30PM

About an hour ago, the New York Times tweeted the news that President Obama and House Speaker Boehner might have a deal on saving America from economic calamity. And regardless of whether that report pans out, far be it for Speaker Boehner to give up seeming like a guy you can make a deal with. No! Pass the unpassable balanced budget amendment! We don't know whether this is true, either, but Reuters says a source says that ratings agency Standard & Poors is meeting with House freshmen Republican at 3 P.M. today. Maybe S&P can convince them that letting the U.S. read more

I'll take my grilled chicken with a side of phenylmethylimidazopyridine inhibitor, please

07/21/11 12:25PM

A random factoid that exists in my brain is that the yummy burnt char on grilled meat is carcinogenic. I don't have a link to cite for that fact, I know it because my cube neighbor is a health editor for msnbc.com. (She's also a vegetarian and has pointed out that yummy burnt char on grilled vegetables is not carcinogenic.) Today I added to that factoid the detail that the grilling causes proteins and sugars in chicken to form heterocyclic amines, which is what is cancerous. read more

Congressman Mica happy to spend at home

07/21/11 10:57AM

Congressman John Mica (R-Florida) has decided its time to pull the plug on federal assistance for rural air service. What House Republicans really want is for Congress to make it harder for air and train workers to unionize, in exchange for extending the life of the Federal Aviation Administration.Failing that, Mr. Mica, the transportation chair, wants an end to government support of more than $1,000 a ticket in far-flung airports. "I want to see folks come down here and vote to continue subsidies for more than $1,000," he told reporters yesterday. read more

'We will not let the country get wrecked by this.'

07/21/11 10:11AM

How bad is this debt ceiling thing? Bad enough that Ezra Klein traces President Obama's fumbling of the negotiations back to the cat food commission. Bad enough that House Republicans cannot reach agreement even among their own caucus. Bad enough that Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne told us last night:I have rarely been this depressed, I think, and I've been here awhile, about the way Washington is working. This is a totally politician-induced crisis. read more

The trees at Toomer's Corner in Auburn, Ala., are adorned with thousands of rolls of toilet paper Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 following a 56-17 win over South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference Championship NCAA college football game.

But what about the tree poisoner?

07/21/11 02:06AM

Several people responded to tonight's Moment of Geek segment on the tree-rescue efforts in Alabama with questions about whether the poisoner was ever caught and brought to justice. The phone call to the radio show happened on January 27. By February 17, police had arrested a 62-year-old man named Harvey Almorn Updyke, Jr.At the time, the investigation included the FBI because the EPA plays a role in the regulation of the Spike 80DF herbicide, but so far Updyke faces only state charges. read more

As TRMS blog overlord Laura Conaway says, no one ever scrubs the internet well.  Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) is no exception.Next month the governor is hosting a stadium prayer rally.  He's invited his fellow 49 governors from all over the country to pray and fast and so far only one has accepted.  But it's Gov. Perry's endorsers who've really piqued our interest. read more
