Mitch Daniels an embarrassing choice for GOP response

01/19/12 07:00PM

Rachel Maddow lists the many reasons why embattled Indiana governor and former George W. Bush budget director, Mitch Daniels, is a poor and embarrassing choice by Republicans to deliver the official GOP response to President Barack Obama's State of the... watch

All the AP gives us is, "Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, pinches the nose of Bonnie Ellison, 78, of Easley, S.C. while shaking hands with supporters at Mutt’s Barbeque in Easley, S.C. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012." read more

Governor Daniels finds the spotlight

01/19/12 04:42PM

The Indiana AFL/CIO has dug up this clip of Governor Mitch Daniels at a Teamsters dinner in 2006:… we cannot afford to have civil wars over issues that might divide us and divert us from that path. And I have said over and over, I'm a supporter of the labor laws we have in the state of Indiana. I'm not interested in changing any of them – not the prevailing wage laws and certainly not a Right to Work law. We can succeed in Indiana with the laws we have respecting the rights of labor and fair and free competition for everyone.Governor Mitch Daniels now supports a Right to Work law. read more

Chart: Your taxes and Mitt Romney's

01/19/12 03:19PM

Taking Mitt Romney's own estimate that he pays a tax rate of 15 percent, this chart compares what he owes the IRS to what an average American family would pay. Ethan Pollack of the Economic Policy Institute, who posted the chart, writes that this is a matter of long-term policy choices by our government:Why is the government favoring Romney’s income over that of most Americans? After all, it's not like he’s been working recently—he’s been running for president for the better part of five years. read more

The math of Mitt Romney meets Newtmentum

01/19/12 01:43PM

The latest survey from Public Policy Polling (pdf) has Newt Gingrich leading Mitt Romney in South Carolina by 34 to 28. The pollsters argue that Mitt Romney is holding steady, that Rick Santorum is falling and that undecideds are swinging toward Mr. Gingrich. The former House speaker is also up, much more narrowly, in a string of polls. read more

Wow for this: 'Dismantling Detroit'

01/19/12 11:04AM

They're tearing down old Detroit and sending the pieces to China. That's the message of a new micro-documentary from the New York Times, "Dismantling Detroit." Filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady write:One freezing evening we happened upon the young men in this film, who were illegally dismantling a former Cadillac repair shop. They worked recklessly to tear down the steel beams and copper fasteners. They were in a hurry to make it to the scrap yard before it closed at 10 p.m., sell their spoils and head to the bar. read more

Rick Perry drags heart back to Texas

01/19/12 10:28AM

So Rick Perry's getting out of the race. The Texas governor leaves so many great moments, from the "oops" to the hugging of the syrup. But Steve Benen suggests that his openness to immigration reform doomed his bid. This bit, from September, sticks:“If you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they've been brought there through no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart."I guess having a heart is just not in this year. Governor Perry is throwing his support to Newt Gingrich, who wants poor kids to work as janitors. read more

Learned from watching too much wrestling: Being rich can make you evil

01/19/12 09:59AM

Mitt Romney's money is a problem, especially in that being worth a couple of hundred million bucks seems to make it very hard for you to stop acting like you're worth a couple of hundred million bucks. You blunder around calling princely sums "not very much," and your tax plan favors the very rich and hurts a lot of other people.Wealth lives right next to sneering cruelty in pop culture. Last night on the show, we looked at the old wrestling example of Ted Dibiase, the Million Dollar Man, the kind of guy who would beat a man into the ground, then stuff a $100 bill in his mouth. read more
