Most useful earthquake visualization I looked at today

As we watched the news of today's earthquake develop, we marveled at how far and wide the reports were coming of people having felt the motion. Boston? Really? Detroit? Chicago? Really?This animation doesn't explain why the quake could be felt so far away, but it does show the far reaching wave effect across the country. The video comes from this page from the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology. Each little circle represents a seismic station location. The color is showing the station moving up (blue) or down (red). read more

Nick Ashford 1942-2011

Suave, sophisticated, impossibly romantic Nick Ashford, who, side by side with his wife Valerie Simpson, co-wrote, "'Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Reach Out And Touch Somebody's Hand," "Solid As A Rock" and so many other Motown astonishments, died yesterday in Manhattan. It's impossible to single out any one of his masterpieces, but put on Chaka Khan's world-shaking version of Ashford and Simpson's "I'm Every Woman" at any disco, anywhere in the world -- right now -- and see what happens.
