I ran into an economic statistic I'd been wondering about the other day, in, of all places, the Styles section of the Sunday Times.The article is about people who try to start their own businesses and find out it's harder to do than they'd imagined. Naturally this is set in the context of a lot of people losing their previous jobs so they're treating unemployment as an opportunity. read more

Hey sci-fi aspirants and cube-bound mindwanderers, this morning I read the funnest starter setting with just enough scientific substance.What would Earth be like to us if it were a cube instead of spherical?As the responding physicist describes it, something extraordinary would be required of the planet's skeleton to preserve the cube shape, but granting that, the gravity of cube-Earth would cause the water and atmosphere to collect in the center of each side, leaving the edges barren and exposed to space and giving the sensation that the sides are cupped (nothing like the image above). read more

As you no doubt remember, the Virginia earthquake that shook the entire northeast of the U.S. last week also shook Virginia's North Anna nuclear plant offline. Subsequently I read about the possibility of some coal plants in Texas having to shut down because of the drought (since power plants heat water into steam to drive turbines, if there's an extreme water shortage...). read more
