Whether Jon Stewart is correct to draw an equivalence between Fox News and MSNBC (or whether he’s even doing such a thing), he’s got a history of criticizing the news media for generating more heat than light and thereby doing more harm than good. Stewart’s utter obliteration of CNN’s Crossfire debate show in 2004 was a watershed moment for both Stewart’s public image and the cable news media. His “you go, then I go” speech at the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear takes on a different character when you contrast that prescription with the news shout-shows mocked in The Daily Show’s Even Stepvhen segments. While Even Stepvhen never stopped being funny, in 2004, dueling talking points framed as “debate” did.
