If you’ve been watching Rick Perry toy around this week with the bait/toxin that is the birther conspiracy, you might reasonably wonder why he’d do such a thing. Last night columnist Wayne Slater of the Dallas Morning News, who knows from Rick Perry, said the Texas governor is a politician who will do what it takes to get elected. “He is a terrific campaigner,” Mr. Slater told us.
He pointed to an example from Mr. Perry’s 2002 campaign for governor, in which Mr. Perry insinuated that his Democratic opponent, Loredo banker Tony Sanchez, had been involved in drug deaths and laundering drug money for cartels. “None of this was true, but Perry has shown an ability with the folks around him to go after an opponent hammer and tong.”
Mr. Perry defeated Mr. Sanchez, 58-40. Up top, an ad from that 2002 election season.
(On the show: Rick Perry, tanking, resorts to kitchen sink strategy.)
