Wednesday’s campaign round-up


Today’s installment of campaign-related news items that won’t necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* The Obama campaign intends to sharpen its focus on Medicare, and released this new video this morning. (The clip appears to be intended for the web, and at 90 seconds, is too long for broadcast.)

* In the crucial swing state of Ohio, Public Policy Polling shows President Obama with a small lead over Mitt Romney, 48% to 45%. In June, the results were identical.

* In another swing state, New Hampshire, PPP shows Obama leading Romney by six, 51% to 45%.

* Karl Rove’s attack operation, Crossroads GPS, and the Koch brothers’ Americans For Prosperity, have spent more on TV ads than every super PAC combined.

* On a related note, Rove’s outfit is investing another $4.7 million in six U.S. Senate races: Nevada, Virginia, Missouri, Ohio, Montana, and Wisconsin.

* Speaking of far-right interest in Senate races, the far-right 60 Plus Association, a group notorious for ridiculous commercials, is launching new attack ads targeting Sens. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) over IPAB.

* In New Hampshire, where incumbent Gov. John Lynch (D) is not seeking re-election, there is no gubernatorial frontrunner because the candidates are not well known.

* Now that the Senate race is set in Wisconsin, the DSCC has reserved $2.3 million in fall air time in support of Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D).

* And in Pennsylvania, Republican Tom Smith’s campaign against Sen. Bob Casey (D) was already a longshot, but his odds got worse when a libertarian with the same last name made the ballot.
