'We are confident he acted alone'

As the day has progressed, additional details about the tragic violence in Aurora have slowly come to light. Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates held a press briefing midday; here's the video.

Note, a total of 71 people were shot, 12 of whom were killed. James Eagan Holmes, the alleged shooter, was quickly taken into custody this morning, though he apparently made no effort to flee the police, and told local law enforcement about his booby-trapped apartment.

Local official said there appeared to be "very sophisticated" explosives or flammable materials in his residence, including numerous bottles containing an unknown liquid, and it may be days before the scene is fully dealt with. Police aren't yet close to even entering the apartment.

Holmes, a graduate student from San Diego with a degree in neuroscience, did not appear to have any accomplices. "We are confident he acted alone," Oates told reporters.

The gunman carried four weapons -- two 40-caliber Glock handguns, a Remington 870 single-barrel pump shotgun, and a Smith & Wesson AR-15 assault-style rifle -- all of which were reportedly purchased legally in May from local Gander Mountain Guns and Bass Pro Shop stores.

President Obama, meanwhile, issued a proclamation ordering flags to fly at half-staff until sunset, July 25.
