Tuesday’s Mini-Report, 9.8.15

Today’s edition of quick hits:

* Migrant crisis: “The collision of exasperated migrants with overwhelmed authorities created chaotic scenes Tuesday at choke points up and down the route being traveled by tens of thousands of people seeking refuge in Western Europe.”

* Great move: “President Obama on Monday unveiled a new executive order requiring federal contractors to provide paid sick leave, a small but resonant stride in the administration’s larger push to humanize some aspects of the American labor market.”

* The state of Washington: “A fire at a Planned Parenthood facility in Washington state Friday has been determined to have been arson, fire officials in Pullman said.” [Disclosure: my wife works for Planned Parenthood, but her work is unrelated to this office.]

* Officials in Baltimore “have reached a $6.4 million settlement in the wrongful death of Freddie Gray, who sustained fatal neck injuries while in police custody in April.”

* An important story worth watching: “Signs of an ongoing Russian military buildup in Syria have drawn U.S. concerns and raised questions of whether Moscow plans to enter the conflict. President Vladimir Putin has been coy on the subject, saying Russia is weighing various options, a statement that has fueled suspicions about the Kremlin’s intentions.”

* The roller-coaster ride continues: “U.S. stocks jumped 2 percent on Tuesday, bouncing back from steep losses last week amid a China-fueled rebound in global equities.”

* When it comes to incidents in which police officers are shot and killed, society’s goal should obviously be zero. That said, it’s encouraging to know that there’s been a significant decline in these shootings this year compared to last year.

* And Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said on Twitter this afternoon that it’s “ironic that Congress may vote on Iran nuke deal on 9/11.” Here’s a tip for politicians everywhere: if you don’t know what a word means, try to avoid using it publicly. In this case, there’s simply no irony here at all.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.
