Romney on health reform, then and now

James Carter posts this interview with Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, which he dates to 2006. Governor Romney talks about health reform in his state:

What we’re really doing here is saying, you know what? The free market does work. If we let people buy private health insurance plans and insist that if they can afford to do so, they do it, we can get government out of the business of handing out free care. And that’s what we’ve been doing in our state to the tune of more than a billion dollars a year.

In that 2006 interview, Governor Romney went on to say that different states might apply the idea differently, but that the overall principle applies at the national level. In 2012, as we talked about last night, Governor Romney says he’d start the repeal of health reform on day one.
