Today's installment of campaign-related news items that won't necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* Alabama's Republican presidential primary is tomorrow, and PPP shows a very competitive race: only two points separate Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum.

* The race in Mississippi is nearly as close, with PP showing same three candidates separated by only five points.

* With limited statewide name recognition, Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) will resign his House seat, effective next week, to focus on this year's gubernatorial race full time.

* Rejecting his own campaign's pronouncements from last week, Gingrich has vowed to stay in the race, even if he fails in Alabama and Mississippi tomorrow.

* The former Speaker is also denying reports that he's in talks with Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) to form a presidential ticket during the primary process.

* Former Maine Gov. Angus King (I), the apparent frontrunner in his state's open U.S. Senate race, hasn't said which party he'd caucus with if he wins, but King said on Friday he supports President Obama's re-election bid.

* A conservative AARP rival, called 60-Plus, is launching attack ads targeting five Democratic senators this month. The far-right group is spending $3.5 million as part of the effort.

* In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker (R) isn't just gearing up for a recall election; he's also creating a legal defense fund, made necessary by the ongoing criminal investigation involving his former aides.

* And the Obama campaign's upcoming documentary, due out later this week, will apparently feature former President Clinton talking about the bin Laden raid.
