Maine Republican Governor Paul LePage said he'll ask the state legislature in January to pass a bill requiring drug testing for welfare recipients. From the Portland Press-Herald:

"I'm going to ask the Legislature to allow us to do what every truck driver in the United States of America has to do, take a random test," he said. "I think if we're going to take our own limited resources, we ought to be able to test 'em on occasion."

FWIW, you could easily argue the public safety merits of testing truck drivers for drugs -- trucks are big and they can go fast. If anyone out there sees someone crash their welfare check into another vehicle, please alert us.

Governor LePage is setting off down a rocky road. In Florida, Governor Rick Scott is still trying to defend his new law about drug tests and welfare in court.
