Launch party on tonight

If you live along the mid-Atlantic or towards the northeast, you may get a glimpse of a rocket launch tonight to help kick-off your weekend. NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment (LADEE) spacecraft is scheduled to launch tonight at 11:27 p.m. from the Wallops Flight Facility along the eastern shore of Virginia. The map above shows the areas where the launch should be visible from, assuming clear skies and an unobstructed view of the horizon. Click on the map for access to another image showing what time the rocket should be visible after launch at a given location. In general, coastal areas away from urban (i.e., well lit) areas are best, but to this geek it's worth a try if you're anywhere in the viewing region. Godspeed, LADEE!
