President Obama today is announcing a new plan for creating jobs in rural places – if you’re in one, sing out in the comments, please, and tell us what people have for work where you live. As we’ve noted before, government jobs make up a large part of the economy in America’s small towns. Without much to fall back on, rural places stand to suffer a fair bit from the fashion for government austerity.

Month after month, cuts in government spending have led to layoffs and hiring freezes at all levels of government. If you’re a Republican trying to starve the beast, then you’ll love the chart over there. If you’re anyone hoping to revive the economy, this chart can only be bad news. The chart comes from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which says we can get ready for more laid-off cops and clerks and municipal lifeguards as the spending cuts in the debt-ceiling deal kick in.

President Obama’s new plan calls for $350 million worth of support for rural small businesses over the next five years, compared to the $2.4 trillion in cuts over a decade that the president signed as part of the debt-ceiling deal.
